A new report on Bungie’s codenamed MOBA game Gummy Bears detailed what the general details of the game is expected to contain.
Bungie’s work in the Sony and PlayStation realms have been cooking for quite some time. The latest rumblings have provided new details on their little-known MOBA codenamed Gummy Bears. Their latest update provided information that the game’s latest feature will be taking inspirations from Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. games. Based on the very little confirmed knowledge of the game in development, it appears the game will be a brainchild of Super Smash Bros. and League of Legends.
In a new report, The Game Post claims that Gummy Bears is described as a team-based competitive MOBA, which is planned to be aimed at a younger audience with a brighter, more vibrant art style. The game is described as having “lo-fi and cozy vibes.” The Super Smash Bros. inspiration Gummy Bears is expected to use is the percentage-based health system commonly found in those Nintendo fighting games.
In League of Legends or Dota 2, there is usually a health bar with number ranges to indicate the different lives of each players’ characters at their current level and depending on item buffs. Another piece of inspiration from the Nintendo-verse fighter game is how players can knock other players off the map. Apparently, Gummy Bears is planning to utilize this function, which again, is not something common in MOBA games.
Appealing to a younger audience is an interesting choice from Bungie’s previous works. Whether Gummy Bears is the answer has yet to be determined. However, the game has been described by Bungie as the “most fun” project from incubation, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from playtests. Just from the one picture shared across the web on the game, it looks aesthetically-pleasing, for sure. Many new MOBAs have tried to break the likes of League of Legends, Dota 2 and Smite, but many have failed. Perhaps, this could be the one to shake things up.
Other reports noted other gameplay mechanics following Bungie’s recent patent filing. The patent describes a system where towers in MOBA games can dynamically move, jump, dodge attacks, and use special abilities when charged. This could add a different gameplay strategy unique to this game. Most MOBA games have stationary towers that only attack within a certain enemy range spotted. The Game Post outlined some great details about what is known about the MOBA game so far. Here is the list, as posted:
- A PvP team-based competitive game.
- While fundamentally a MOBA, the game’s “Smash Bros.” influences mean it feels distinct from other entries in the genre; falling off maps, and replacing health-bar eliminations.
- Multiple game modes are planned.
- Gummy Bears is described as having lo-fi and cozy vibes, a sharp departure from Bungie’s usual dramatic, high-stakes sci-fi worlds.
- The project has been praised internally as Bungie’s “most fun” project out of incubation.
- The game is targeting a younger demographic with vibrant, colorful visuals.
- Expect a variety of roles, including Support, Attack, and Defense classes.
- Gummy Bears has been in development for at least three years.
The report also detailed how this news came about following Bungie’s second round of layoffs in mid-2024. Sadly, these layoffs were made after celebrating the release of Destiny 2’s The Final Shape expansion. In an official statement, Bungie announced, “We are working with PlayStation Studios leadership to spin out one of our incubation projects…to form a new studio within PlayStation Studios to continue its promising development.”
