Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon Review

Kaiju No. 8 is adapted from the original manga created by Naoya Matsumoto. It is animated by Production I.G (GHOST IN THE SHELL), with kaiju artwork and design supervision by Studio Khara (Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition, Shin Godzilla (Pre Visualization Development).

Co-directors Shigeyuki Miya and Tomomi Kamiya return for this film, promising the same attention to detail as the TV series. While Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is predominantly an omnibus recap film of Season 1, it also features a new original episode titled “Hoshina’s Day Off.”

In a Japan teeming with kaiju, Kafka Hibino is employed in the critical field of monster disposal. After reuniting with childhood friend Mina Ashiro, a rising star in the anti-kaiju Defense Force, he chooses to pursue his long-abandoned dream of joining the Force. That is until he suddenly transforms into the powerful “Kaiju No. 8.” With help from junior colleague Reno Ichikawa, Kafka hides his identity to pursue his dream of passing the Defense Force exam and standing at Mina’s side.

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon Review

The recut version of Season 1 in Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon captures the best emotional scenes and adrenaline-pumped fights. However, I would not recommend this film to fully experience the show, as this cut skips over flashback scenes that flesh out each character in the series. This is a great way for those who have seen the show to catch up before the second season premieres in the summer of 2025, featuring some minor additional shots.

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon stitches Season 1 episodes seamlessly and makes sense to keep the action at the forefront.”

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon stitches Season 1 episodes seamlessly and makes sense to keep the action at the forefront. The movie doesn’t cover all episodes of Season 1, but the recap gives enough to entice new viewers to watch it themselves.

As for Hoshina’s Day Off, the original episode covers a rare day off in the Defense Force. After spending so long training, Reno has forgotten what he’s supposed to do with his free time. He sees that Hoshina is up to something with his own day off and decides to go on a mission to tail him with Iharu! The Defense Force recruits do not know what they have gotten themselves into.

Hoshina’s Day Off feels more like an OVA than a complete side story like Spy x Family Code: White or the My Hero Academia movies. For those who have watched Season 1 and followed the manga, this special episode is more heartwarming than expanding Kaiju No. 8’s lore.

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon Review

The biggest mistake of the special episode is not including the final fight at the end, even after bringing together most of the main characters. Hoshina’s Day Off robs the audience of a cool, new fight on the big screen. This is a colossal missed opportunity to showcase Kaiju No. 8 in a style tailored for cinemas. The focus on friendship is a core principle of the show, but so is the action.

The only consolation is hearing the new OneRepublic song, Invincible, by the time the credits roll. OneRepublic creates another great summer bop for a fun, action-packed series. Hopefully, it becomes the intro or outro theme song for Season 2 because it is quite catchy.

Aside from the kaiju-filled stitching of some of the best moments in Kaiju No. 8 Season 1, Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon celebrates Season 1 and caters toward bringing new fans to the franchise. Those who have already seen the first season may find the hour-and-a-half recap unnecessary and will only enjoy Hoshina’s Day Off if they appreciate light, filler episodes. Otherwise, this movie does not offer much to the Kaiju No. 8 franchise.
