The PC version of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth set a record for most concurrent players in a single-player game from the series this past weekend.
According to the data collected from this past weekend, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is already breaking some records. One of the most anticipated games to kick off 2025 came out on PC on January 23rd and has already brought in over 40,000 players over this past weekend. This record is more than double the numbers that the prequel game Final Fantasy 7 Remake brought in.
According to SteamDB (as spotted by Eurogamer), Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth hit a peak of 40,564 concurrent players over the weekend. Final Fantasy 7 Remake only peaked at around 14,000. Final Fantasy 16 also only peaked at over 27,000 concurrent players. The only game in the franchise to have had a bigger player base at its peak was Final Fantasy 14, which sat at around 95,000 players. This makes a lot of sense for a live-service game versus a single-player entry.
Here is a list of Final Fantasy games which had the highest peak for concurrent Steam players:
- Final Fantasy 14 Online (95,150)
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth (40,564)
- Final Fantasy 15 (29,498)
- Final Fantasy 16 (27,508)
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade (13,803)
- Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster (13,263)
- Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion (9,648)
- Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age (8,386)
- Final Fantasy 13 (8,320)
- Final Fantasy 9 (8,229)

While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth serves as the second remake in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, it surprisingly outperformed its predecessor. This could be because now players know what to expect from the new series.
Reviews and comments also applauded how well the game ran at launch, with many noting the stunning art of the environment and character designs. The only critiques that some commenters noted were heavily related to the technical issues on Steam Deck, along with some PC builds struggling to maintain consistent good frame rates.
This sequel follows the journey of Cloud, Tifa, and the gang as they begin exploring the planet on chocobos after escaping from Midgar. They are chasing the fallen hero, Sephiroth; however, this villain will not make the journey easy for them.

Square Enix previously made comments that they would be switching to a multiplatform strategy since they realized their sales for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 were not meeting sales “expectations.” Initially, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth were released as PS4 and PS5 exclusives, but eventually landed on PC.
The company has also noted how they want to explore releasing their games on Xbox consoles too. So, this could happen by the time they release the third game in the remake trilogy. For now, devs for the final third installment shared that the story is already finished, and will not be exclusive to PlayStation 6.
