In a new interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer suggested that Starfield could be a game released on the PlayStation side of consoles.
PlayStation players who exclusively play on the PS4 and PS5 may get into the action with another game from Xbox in the future. In a recent interview following the Developer Direct, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer shared his thoughts on Starfield potentially being on other consoles. He added how they would not hold the game back if the potential to reach a wider audience is jeopardized.
Speaking to IGN’s former Director of Video Content Strategy Destin Legarie via his Patreon, Spencer responded “No” after Legarie asked, “Can you solidify that Starfield is staying put for the time being?” Spencer explained, “There’s no specific game…this kind of goes back to my red line answer. There’s no reason for me to put a ring fence around any game and say this game will not go to a place where it would find players, where it would have business success for us.”
In short, this example with Starfield confirms other reports and their claims that the Xbox exclusivity era is over. Console-exclusive games have fueled competition in the gaming industry, but it seems this is the end of that era to a certain extent. Again, this is most likely the cause of Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which offset some of the creative and financial balance in the industry.

There is not enough data to support whether making games like Starfield a multiplatform title is a great long-term strategy. So far, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is one of Xbox’s latest exclusive games, which is confirmed to be out on PS5 for a spring 2025 release window. This is a great time for gamers to take advantage of Xbox opening its game lineups to almost every last-gen, current-gen, and future-gen platform.
Spencer also talked about how Game Pass was a big part of allowing players to try out their games. “Game Pass is an important component to playing games on our platform, but to keep games off other platforms, that’s not a path for us.” This will be another thing to consider in their strategy, and whether titles on Game Pass may crossover into PlayStation’s counterpart of the PS Store.
“So I look at this, how can we make our games as strong as possible? Our platform continues to grow, on console, on PC, and on cloud. It’s just going to be a strategy that works for us.” Spencer ended on the whole conversation of Xbox’s new multiplatform strategy.
