Sony Unveils PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter, Out On August 7 1

Sony announced today that the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter support will be coming out on August 7th for about $59.99.

Sony announced three months ago that they would support more VR gameplay by providing players with a PC adapter for the PlayStation VR2 headset. Today, they finally revealed the adapter details and visual look of it. It will cost approximately $59.99 USD/€59.99 / £49.99 at select retailers. This will be a game changer, or rather a game “expander” since players will now have access to buy and play popular VR steam titles like Half-Life: Alyx, Fallout 4 VR, and War Thunder.

All of these details were outlined in the latest PlayStation blog released this morning. They recommended players will also need a commercially available DisplayPort cable (sold separately) that is compatible with DisplayPort 1.4, as well as a Steam account and a PC that meets the minimum requirements stated in the blog. Here is a look at the minimum PC requirements for PlayStation VR2 gameplay.

The setup seemed to be fairly easy too. The blog explained that players can “simply connect the PS VR2 to your PC using the PS VR2 PC adapter and the DisplayPort 1.4 cable.” Players will also have to download the PlayStation VR2 App and the SteamVR App from Steam, and from here, users can customize their settings that work best within their play areas and comfortability. They also added in a disclaimer that the performance will vary based on the players’ PC specs, as well as the SteamVR games’ specs.

The second half of the blog described some key features that will not be supported with PlayStation VR2 on PC since it was originally designed for the PS5. They noted that HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble), are not available when playing on PC. However, the visuals and sensory experience should still hold up with the PS VR2 still supporting “4K visuals (2000 x 2040 per eye), 110-degree field of view, finger touch detection, and see-through view, as well as foveated rendering (without eye tracking) and 3D Audio in supported games.”

The last thing the blog left off with was a special deal as part of the Days of Play celebration: players in select regions can get $100 off PS VR2 and the PS VR2 Horizon Call of the Mountain Bundle (for PS5) until June 12. Ultimately, you can now use the PS VR2 on your PC if you have a good enough PC rig.

Based on the specs sheet, the minimum requirements are fairly generous. Despite an NVIDIA GTX 1650 or later being the minimum for the GPU, it recommended using an RTX 30-series card, or an AMD Radeon RX 6600XT or later card. I have to agree that if you really want the best VR experience with this adapter, make sure your PC can support it as best as possible first. As for the processor recommendations, I feel like most gamers should really exceed the minimum specs here.

The final interesting detail I noticed was that they could not promise that all Bluetooth adapters will work due to Bluetooth adapter compatibility. But they stated that more details will follow at launch. With the launch still months away, hopefully some of these kinks will be worked out. Of course, you can judge whether the investment to play games on SteamVR will be worth it, or just stick to playing PlayStation VR2 games on the PS5.
